Frequently asked lawn, turf, and forage questions

Q: Why plant seed for wildlife?

A: The goal is to create a nutritious, desirable food source that attracts larger

     animals in your hunting area.

Q: When do I plant?

A: Planting season is dependent on the species and growth habit.

Early spring (April--May)> Clover,Alfalfa, Chicory, Cool-Season grasses, Oats.

Late Spring (May--Early June)>Corn, Soybeans, Sugar Beets

Summer (July--August15th)>Brassicas, Clover, Alfalfa, Cool-Season grasses, Buckwheat

Fall (August15th--October10th)> Winter Rye, Winter Wheat

Q: Where can I plant?

A: The ideal location should get plenty of sun and be in the area used by wildlife.

Consider clear cut fields, old logging roads, hay fields, pond banks and other areas of animal activity. Don't be afraid to try a new location.

Q: What about soil testing?

A: Soil sample your plot area to the tillage depth or at 6 inches if no-tilling. Collect a minimum of 30 cores per sample or at least 10 cores per acre. Air dry samples, remove organic material, stones and send to lab for testing.

The soil sample test results will provide fertilizer and liming recommendations for your plot.

We here at Preferred Seed or your local Extension office will be able to help with the results.

Q: How about pH?

A: A conventional soil sample will determine the soil pH and provide a liming recommendation. You can also get a pH kit from your local Extenstion office for a nominal fee. After the test, liming may be required to achieve a correct range for pH. A pH range between 6.5-7.0 can offer the best growing conditions. A low pH can bind cructial nutrients in the soil.
