The Nordic Brand Trefoil Story

Nordic Brand Birdsfoot Trefoil is a combination of several recently developed, top performing European type trefoil varieties that together provide broad genetic diversity. It is a widely adapted, winter hardy, non-bloat producing perennial trefoil brand that has performed exceptionally well under the variable soil and climate conditions typical of the Northeastern states and Eastern Canada. It can tolerate fairly acid soils as well as less well drained soils and soils low in fertility. It is not as productive as alfalfa on good alfalfa soils. On the other hand, it does respond to applications of lime and fertilizer, and is more productive than alfalfa on more marginal soils. While Nordic is more upright in growth than Empire, it has proven to be well suited for both pasture and hay. It may be seeded alone, but is normally seeded in a mixture with either timothy, kentucky bluegrass, reed canarygrass, perennial ryegrass, tall fescue, bromegrass or red clover. Late spring is the preferred time to seed Nordic or Nordic/grass mixtures. It is important to prepare a firm seed bed and place the seed at a depth no greater than 1/2 inch. If a small grain companion crop is used, its rate of seeding should be reduced, and it should be removed early before competition becomes a problem. Nordic can also be no-till seeded into existing grass sods, however the existing grasses should be suppressed prior to seeding. Rotational grazing is the best way to manage Nordic/grass pastures. For machine harvested forage (hay or silage) stands of Nordic or trefoil/grass mixtures should be cut when trefoil is in early bloom. Nordic plants do bloom throughout the summer, so quality does not decline as rapidly with maturity as is true with other legumes. With as many as four top performing varieties offering a broad genetic diversity, Nordic provides insurance against the killing effect of any particular disease or environmental threat.
