The Grazer EXTRA Brand Alfalfa Story

Grazing alfalfa requires top-notch management to ensure optimal stand persistence and animal performance. As with any high-value crop, greater economic return is generally achieved with a higher level of management. With the development of alfalfa cultivars selected specifically for grazing tolerance, some of the management emphasis on stand persistence is diminished, but persistence must remain a prime concern. Fortunately, Grazer EXTRA features the most superb sunken crown structure available to help minimize that concern.

Grazer EXTRA Brand Alfalfa is a deep crowned, high forage yielding variety. It carries the sunken crown trait, which helps insulate the crown in severe winter weather. The sunken crown also helps protect the crown from equipment wheel traffic and animal hoof damage. Grazer EXTRA’s crown structure is unique from other alfalfas in that it is 1 to 1-1/2 inches below the soil surface (conventional alfalfas are 1/2 to 3/4 inch). Its strong disease package helps fight infections that would otherwise damage crowns. Grazer EXTRA expresses quick re-growth after cutting with an upright growth habit. Grazer EXTRA has exceptional forage quality capabilities along with an excellent disease, insect and nematode resistance package.

Grazer EXTRA has been evaluated for yield over a wide range of soil and climatic conditions in the Northeast and upper Midwest. Forage quality of properly managed production of Grazer EXTRA  is excellent. Pest resistance is above average with a 28 out of a possible 30 in the Wisconsin Disease Resistance Index. Grazer EXTRA has excellent winter survival, combined with fast recovery after harvest and excellent fall dormancy. This combination provides more flexibility in cutting management.
