The Summer EXTRA Brand Teff Grass Story

Teff is a warm season C4 annual grass, native to Ethiopia that thrives in warm climates. Its primary use in Ethiopia is as a food grain where it serves as the major dietary source of protein. The use of teff can be traced back to about 3360 BC. It is extremely drought and heat tolerant. Teff is extremely sensitive to frost and requires a frost-free growing season. Teff grows as a fine-stemmed, bunch grass and produces a large crown with numerous tillers. It has a shallow, massive, fibrous root system. Teff’s vegetative characteristics and productivity have led to its recent development as a forage crop. Replicated testing has demonstrated the superior performance and excellent adaptation in the Northeast and throughout the U.S.

Summer EXTRA Brand Teff Grass was developed as a high yielding, high quality summer annual forage grass. It was selected from the world collection of teff accessions evaluated for forage yield, recovery after harvest, and forage quality. Under irrigation or with adequate precipitation and high temperatures, it can yield 4-6 tons/acre in a 2- or 3-cut system in a 90-day growing season. It produces a very leafy, fine stemmed hay. Like all teff varieties, crowns of Summer EXTRA Brand Teff Grass can be damaged by cutting too low so a cutting height of 3-4 inches is recommended.

As a relatively new crop in the US, few insect or disease pests have been observed. Summer EXTRA Brand Teff Grass has been free of most disease pests especially compared to cereal crops used for hay. It can be grown in most locations without insecticides or fungicides. Summer EXTRA Brand Teff Grass can be grown on a wide range of soil types, tolerating both drought and waterlogged conditions.

Summer EXTRA Brand Teff Grass can be used as a high quality feed for livestock and horses. It is well suited for grazing. Forage quality has compared favorably with Timothy hay. Animal acceptance and palatability of Summer EXTRA Brand Teff Grass has been reported to be excellent by horse owners. Protein content of teff hay can range from 12-20% depending on maturity at cutting. Mineral content of Summer EXTRA Brand Teff Grass hay is well balanced. To maximize yield and quality, it is recommended to cut the crop at approximately 30-40 day intervals.
