The Rustler Forage Tall Fescue Story

Rustler Forage Tall Fescue was selected for its high yield potential, winterhardiness and improved disease resistance. It can be harvested as hay or silage, and because it is endophyte free it is especially well suited for both beef and dairy cattle. Rustler has excellent early seedling vigor and recovery after cutting. Its large, soft, digestible leaves contain a higher percentage of digestible dry matter with less fiber than other tall fescues. This makes it more palatable to cattle and, therefore, can improve live weight gains.

Rustler Forage Tall Fescue can be grown alone or in mixture with a legume: alfalfa, red clover, white clover or birdsfoot trefoil, depending on intended use. The inclusion of a legume may improve forage quality, and the legume serves as a source of nitrogen for the fescue. Once established Rustler can compete with weeds and has improved resistance to many foliar diseases. It is tolerant of heat, drought, poor drainage, low fertility and a wide range of pH. However, it is highly responsive to both lime and fertilizer. For maximum production established stands of Rustler Tall Fescue should be fertilized annually.

In recent Cornell University and Penn State research trials for yield, forage quality and persistence Rustler has placed among the top of the charts.

When grazed a rotational grazing system is preferred. It is also well suited for use as a stock piled forage for late fall and winter use.
