The Hopper Safe 55 Brand Alfalfa Story

Hopper Safe 55 Alfalfa is a 7th generation variety selected for high resistance (HR) to potato leafhopper while maintaining high forage yield potential along with very good winterhardiness and persistence, excellent resistance to major diseases attacking alfalfa in the Northeast, fast recovery after cutting, and high forage quality.

For years chemical control measures were the only effective means of controlling potato leafhopper. Now as a result of advanced breeding methods resistance to this insect is available in Hopper Safe 55 Brand Alfalfa.

Hopper Safe 55 Alfalfa provides high resistant levels to leafhoppers, develops an environment to decrease female PLH egg laying (fewer egg masses) and provides an environment (ecosystem) in which fewer PLH nymphs survive and feed on the plant, limiting yield and protein losses due to PLH infestations. Researchers have determined that once leafhopper “yellowing” occurs in the field, 40% of the damage is complete. Potato leafhoppers if present stunt the plant growth which reduces forage yield, lowers protein yield, lessens the plants capacity to ward off diseases and weakens the alfalfa plant to prepare for winter.

PLH is especially damaging to new spring seedings but can also attack second cuttings of established stands. If you do not scout and spray for PLH and have experienced “hopper burn” in new seedings or 2nd cuttings of established stands, PS 2010 Leafhopper Brand Alfalfa is an excellent choice for your next seeding. In a “no spray” environment, if leafhoppers are present, Hopper Safe 55 Alfalfa has consistently produced higher yields than conventional varieties.
