Due to its high protein, palatability and calcium content alfalfa is becoming one of the more popular additions to wildlife food plots. Alfalfa’s high protein content ranging from 16% to 28% and its high digestibility make it a desirable forage for deer who require 16% to 18% protein in their diet. In addition to its excellent protein content alfalfa is also high in calcium and phosphorus two nutrients that are critical antler growth which when paired with its high protein content make alfalfa highly suitable for growing big healthy deer with big healthy racks. In addition to its qualities for meeting the needs of deer diets alfalfa is also great for many different game bird species. This is due to its ability to attract and hold insects for bird consumption and the same high quality green forage that deer consume can also be beneficial for birds to consume especial young birds. Alfalfa is great forage to plant in the early spring after the winter plantings are depleted because it will vary the diet of the wildlife but it will also provide summer long forage to keep the wildlife coming back to the property. Having the quality forage through the summer and fall helps provide the nutrition needed for adequate milk production, helps promote breeding as well as helps the animals gain weight and bulk up to stay healthy and survive the winter months. Aside from all of the dietary benefits, alfalfa is also great for forage plots due to that fact that is a perennial that will come back year after year. Another plus to alfalfa is its nitrogen fixing capabilities. Alfalfa can symbiotically fix nitrogen to association with Rizobium bacteria. In other words alfalfa when treated with rizobium can take and fix or convert the nitrogen from the atmosphere into a usable form for the plant. This is great because it eliminates a step in plot maintenance in that you don’t have to remember and periodically apply nitrogen fertilizer to the plot. All of these qualities make alfalfa a great addition to any wildlife management efforts, whether it is in a mixture with clovers and other forage crop or in a stand alone plot, for both hunting and viewing pleasure.
