If you are looking for a reliable source of good nutrition for your wildlife plots then clover is definitely the way to go. With its protein content ranging from 20% to 30% it’s the perfect candidate to meet the dietary protein needs of deer and other large game animals. With the many different varieties of clover available it not hard to find one or two that will suit your needs in your plot. Clovers are more digestible than forage grasses and grow for a longer period of the year giving you longer periods of quality forage. Clover will be most important in the spring and early summer before the temperatures will get too warm. It will be at this time that the protein content will be its highest and that the clover will experience the bulk of its growth. Clover is mainly spring forage as the high protein is used in antler and milk production however it will also go through a growth spurt in the fall which will attract grazing wildlife though they will not be as aggressive on the clover as they would in the spring. Clover varieties can be mixed with each other and planted together or planted with grains and annual grasses that will act as a nurse crop. The grains and grasses will start growing earlier in the spring than clovers and therefore will ease the grazing pressure and damage to the young clover plants. Chicory is another great companion for clover plots due to its heat and drought tolerance it will excel in the warm summer months providing quality forage, when clover quality declines and the plant goes through a dormancy period. Avoid using perennial grasses as they tend to be more aggressive than clover and can out compete it and take over the plot. Another plus to clover is that it shares the same nitrogen fixing ability as alfalfa in association with the pretreatment of rhizobium bacteria. This means that the clover plant has the ability to pull nitrogen from the atmosphere and fix or convert the nitrogen to a usable form for the plant which makes maintenance of the plot easier due to the fact that nitrogen fertilizer does not have to be applied once established. Below we have the different varieties of clover we offer at Preferred Seed Company, mostly perennial although we do have a few varieties that are annual, along with the different characteristics of each. We also have our Big Buck Clover Mix available which is premixed clovers and chicory so it takes all of the work out of blending your own.
